Samburu National Reserve Safari is wealthy in game, with numerous rare species comprising Grevy’s Zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx (also referred to as the samburu special five), elephants(a minimum of 900), lion, (kamunyak the miracle lioness that adopted the baby oryx is a resident in the reserve), leopard, cheetah, wild dogs and over 450 species of birds recorded. Birds of the arid northern bush country are augmented by a number of riverine forest species.
The lesser kestrel and the Taita falcon are species of global conservation concern both found in this reserve. Five species categorised as exposed have also been chronicled here. These are the African darter, great egret, white headed vulture, martial eagle and the yellow billed oxpecker. The critically endangered pancake tortoise (malacochersus tornieri) is also found in Samburu Game Reserve.
Ol Pejeta is the largest black rhino sanctuary in east Africa, and home to two of the world’s last remaining northern white rhino. It is the only place in Kenya to see chimpanzees, in a Sanctuary established to rehabilitate animals rescued from the poachers. It has some of the highest predator densities in Kenya, and still manages a very successful livestock
